#14 - The camp site

We were finishing dinner at a local campsite restaurant, when the owner (who is also the cook) walked out the front door leaving us in charge. The place was literally empty, no one else beside us. A good feeling came over me and I think it was because of his trust. Simple, refreshing and something I don’t often experience. Before disappearing around the corner, he shouted something over his shoulder, which I didn’t understand. “A calf was just born!” he had said in Swiss German.

A few minutes later he returned, Pops settled the bill and we went off to see the calf. A tiny little fellow, wet, lying on the ground with his mother mooing as she licked him clean. Whenever one of us got close to take a picture, the cow moved away, mooed and stared at us. Not menacingly, but with a look of annoyance. When we retreated, she returned to resume her cleaning and caring.

A muddy field,[br_tc] New life,[br_tc] Friendly onlookers,[br_tc] And curious human beings like me,[br_tc] Still amazed and grateful to witness life.

The calf being born reminded me of my own children, bringing on a barrage of thoughts and feelings to rummage through. Not really what I would have imagined.

What a nice gift for a cool, summer day…
